In spite of how great Wednesday night’s kiss was, in the cold light of day Thursday Chloe knew it had been a mistake. She and Reid were inching toward a new relationship and kissing was just too big a leap. Whether it was a leap forward or a leap backward, she didn’t know, but either way, it wasn’t something that should have happened.

And knowing that left her not quite sure what to do. Which was why she was once again avoiding him and hiding out in the attic, eating a dry sandwich for lunch—a dry sandwich she’d run to the kitchen to make in a hurry only when she’d heard Reid leave the house. She wanted a clear head when she saw him again and so far that wasn’t what she had.

So far what she had were a whole bunch of urges that certainly weren’t clarifying. The urge to greet him with another kiss, for instance. The urge to touch him. To have him touch her. To hold hands with him. To do much, much more than hold hands with him…

Definitely not clearheaded thinking. And that was dangerous.

It was just that that kiss had tapped into a sort of Pandora’s box that Chloe had been sitting on since she’d left Northbridge. The Pandora’s box where she’d stuffed her feelings for Reid.

She’d had to do something with them or she would never have been able to get through those early days and months after her parents had ushered her out of Northbridge.

Being pregnant at seventeen had been terrifying in spite of the fact that she’d had a boyfriend who had been determined to do right by her. A boyfriend who had seemed to have no obvious qualms about rushing into a teenage marriage. Chloe had still needed the security of her family, even a family that wasn’t the most compassionate or understanding.

Yes, she’d been in love with Reid. As madly in love as any seventeen-year-old girl could be. And yes, before the pregnancy, she’d been sure they would be together until the end of time.

But then the pregnancy had happened and she’d been brought up short by how serious things could become. Had she felt some relief when she’d miscarried? Yes. She saw that that hadn’t been something Reid had wanted to hear, but it was true. Once she had lost the baby she’d admitted to herself that there was no way she’d been prepared or eager to have a child.

Which was probably why, during the first few weeks in Arizona she’d begun to take some of what her parents had said to heart. To sort through it and decide what they were right about. And what they were right about was that she and Reid were very young. What her parents were right about was that they both needed to go on with school, to grow up, before marriage and babies entered the picture.

And so she’d taken those intense feelings she’d had for Reid and put them away, sealing the lid on them.
